Around Our Table: California Cooks Kosher
Jewish Family Services Los Angeles
Los Angeles, 1994
The Hebrew Benevolent Society (now Jewish Family Services LA) was founded in Los Angeles in 1854, just 4 years after California became a state. From its inception, the charitable organization served both Jews and non-Jews, providing social services. The group also purchased land for the first Jewish cemetery in the city. In later years, it grew to offer medical clinics and childcare assistance, along with support for Holocaust survivors and victims of domestic abuse.
Today the organization is headquartered on Fairfax Avenue, but has service centers throughout LA County.
