Los Angeles Times Prize Cook Book
From Recipe Prize Winners tested and edited by chef A.L. Wyman
Los Angeles, 1923
This cookbook is the final in a series of prize-winning recipe books published by the Los Angeles Times between 1902 and 1923 - featuring recipes submitted by California women, primarily those in the Los Angeles area.
For this 1923 book, over 7,000 recipes were tested (and judged) by L.A. Times food tester and columnists A.L. Wyman. Chef Wyman was well-known to LA residents because his popular “Practical Recipes” column appeared each Saturday in the newspaper. The book advertises itself as not just a local phenomenon but also a “delight to Eastern families who receive it as a gift from California friends.”
When Chef Wyman died in 1926, his wife Mabelle Wyman took over his column. After her death, the Times’ food column was written by the fictional Marian Manners (similar to Prudence Penny at the Los Angeles Examiner and other Hearst publications). Marian was named in homage to Marian Chandler, the wife of Los Angeles Time publisher Harry Chandler, and different authors voiced her over the years. Eventually, the column transformed into the popular Culinary SOS section of the Times, which ran for many years and produced its own cookbooks.
You can read more about this series of cookbooks and the recipes I've cooked from them in the entry for the Los Angeles Times Cook Book No. 2.
