Sunkist Lemons bring out the flavor!
From the California Fruit Growers Exchange of Los Angeles
Los Angeles, 1939
This book of recipes was published by the Los Angeles-based California Fruit Growers Exchange to promote their citrus across the United States. Like several similar books in this archive put out by farmers’ co-operatives, this book was marketed to women who made the majority of food-spending decisions for their households.

Although the Fruit Growers Exchange would not officially change its name to Sunkist Growers until 1952, the group was using the moniker “Sunkist” (from “sunkissed”) far earlier. “Sunkist” appeared prominently at the top of the Exchange’s 1936 headquarters in downtown LA (pictured), across from the city’s Central Library branch.
Designed by well-known Los Angeles architects Walker & Eisen, the Art Deco-style building’s exterior also featured bas-reliefs representing “Production” and “Distribution.” (pictured) It was one of the first structures in Southern California specifically designed to be “earthquake resistant.”
In the 1970s, Sunkist moved its headquarters to the Valley and by the 1980s, the 5th street building had been torn down. Sunkist’s new building in Sherman Oaks, designed by A.C. Martin & Associates, became an icon of its own - instantly recognizable in its low-rise, brutalist style (pictured). While Sunkist has since moved headquarters again, the 1970s building still stands. Today it is, controversially, part of a planned apartment development project on Riverside Dr.
