Superior Cook Book
From the The Lamanda Park Woman's Club
Pasadena, 1927
The Lamanda Park Woman’s Club was organized in 1912 by a small group of women in the Lamanda Park area of South Pasadena. It was originally the women’s auxiliary to the Board of Trade (now the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce), but soon became an autonomous entity with its own building at 58 S. Huntington Drive. The organization eventually grew into the Pasadena Women’s Club.
For decades, Lamanda Park was an unincorporated township, but it was annexed to Pasadena in 1920, just a few years before this cookbook’s publication. At that time, the area was an agricultural center, boasting multiple wineries as well as citrus, olive and walnut groves. Before prohibition, the large number of wine-producers lead to a reputation as a “saloon town.” The community’s agrarian roots are still evident in street names such as Vinyard, Mataro, and Walnut.
Many may have seen Lamanda Park without knowing it, as it doubles for Bedford Falls in scenes from the 1946 film It’s A Wonderful Life.
Lamanda’s industry roots are perhaps evident in the recipes for Grape Meringue Pie and Grape Punch, Other recipes in this cookbook include Soup Dumplings, Spare Ribs and Sauerkraut, Carrot Marmalade, and Orange Egg Nog.
The book also includes advertisements for local business, including one for South-Pasadena based caterer, Bertha L. Turner - who features in several books in this archive.
